Breast reconstruction after mastectomy
Breast reconstruction allows patients to return to well-being and to forget about the illness they have undergone
Breast reconstruction after mastectomy
Very often, women after breast reconstruction say that they actually regret not deciding on such a procedure earlier. They were simply afraid of another operation.
And now they can finally go to the swimming pool, wear a dress with a neckline in summer, which before the operation was a big problem for them. Now they are eager to live, take care of themselves, and are usually nicely dressed and well-groomed. Previously, it was difficult for them to live without acceptance of their own body.
When qualifying women for breast reconstruction, there are no age limits, and the basic criteria are the patient’s health condition and motivation. Sometimes women even undergo such procedures after the age of 70. The absence of a breast constitutes a very significant aesthetic and psychological problem for them.

When can breast reconstruction surgery be performed?
In response to such needs, a range of different surgical methods have been developed to allow breast restoration after amputation. Depending on many factors, these procedures can be performed simultaneously with the mastectomy or as a delayed operation.
The main factors influencing the decision whether the surgery should be simultaneous or delayed include:
- the stage of cancer advancement
- the overall health condition of the patient
- planned oncological treatment (radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy)
- the patient’s lifestyle and expectations
What is the main benefit of immediate breast reconstruction?
The greatest advantage and benefit for the patient from immediate reconstructive surgery is psychological.
The patient, waking up after the amputation surgery, already has a new, reconstructed breast and therefore does not experience the severe stress associated with its absence. Unfortunately, such surgery is not always possible or recommended.
For example, the need for postoperative radiotherapy often means that breast reconstruction is postponed, as radiation could cause complications in the reconstructed breast, potentially leading to implant failure or tissue necrosis.

Advantages of breast reconstruction
Improvement of mental state after surgery
The patient, waking up after amputation surgery combined with immediate reconstruction, already has a new, reconstructed breast and therefore does not experience severe stress related to its absence.
Aesthetic appearance of the breast
Modern reconstructive methods allow restoration of the lost breast and reshaping of the other so that both breasts look very aesthetically pleasing.
Return to well-being
Breast reconstruction enables patients to return to a good state of well-being, accept their own body, and forget about the disease they have undergone.
